Jonathan developed a keen interest in music at an early age. He began his piano studies with his mother at the age of four, continuing to study under her until he passed his grade 8 Associated Board examination at 15.
He became interested in the pipe organ at the age of twelve and went on to study under Gillian Adams. He has since become a member of the Cornwall Organist's Association, for whom he has given several recitals, including one on his Granddad's own four-manual organ. In July 2007, Jonathan passed with distinction the LTCL diploma in organ recital.
In December 2004, Jonathan gained the FRSM diploma in piano performance and in June 2005 he also passed the ALCM diploma in jazz piano. Jonathan now has a busy career as a teacher of piano and organ and a freelance soloist and accompanist.
As a pianist, Jonathan has performed at venues throughout the UK including the York Minster, Norwich Cathedral, Bradford Cathedral and the Hall for Cornwall His concerts have included a wide range of music from jazz standards by Gershwin, Scott Joplin and others to popular classical works and his own improvisations.
On the organ, Jonathan has performed with international concert organist Carlo Curley in a concert for two organs and has also been the organist at Truro Cathedral for the BBC Radio Cornwall Christmas Carol Concert. His programmes have included Mendelssohn’s First Organ Sonata, which he recently played in a master class with Dr Simon Lindley.
As well as performing as a soloist, Jonathan regularly performs with violinist Jake Loewendahl, forming a "Strings and Ivories" duo. Together they have recently performed the Franck Sonata in A and the Beethoven Spring Sonata. Jonathan has also accompanied many well-known choirs, music groups and soloists including the soprano Suzanne Manuell, the East Cornwall Bach Choir and Wadebridge Choral Society.
Jonathan became a Christian at the age of eight and since 12 he has regularly been involved in church music. He is currently the musical director at Grace Community Church, which is an FIEC church near Looe in Cornwall, and conducts the Grace Male Voice Choir. He also occasionaly takes services at other evangelical churches or meetings.
