The Art Of Piano Pedalling
Bring clarity, colour and expression to your piano playing
The pedal can transform the sound of the piano—but knowing when to press it, release it and change it can feel surprisingly confusing.
Perhaps your playing sometimes sounds blurred, or you find yourself relying on pedal markings without really understanding them. You might know the basic movements but want to use the pedal with greater confidence and musical sensitivity.
The Art of Piano Pedalling is my online course designed to help you understand what to listen for and make more thoughtful pedalling choices.
Learn To Pedal With Your Ears
Good pedalling begins with careful listening. It means noticing how the harmony changes, how sounds overlap, and how the pedal affects the character of a phrase.
Through practical explanations and demonstrations at the piano, I’ll help you connect the movement of your foot with the sound you want to create.
You’ll develop a clearer understanding of how to:
- Coordinate pedal changes with your playing
- Listen for unwanted blurring and overlapping harmonies
- Use the pedal to support phrasing and musical expression
- Make informed choices when pedal markings are limited or absent
- Practise pedalling as part of learning a piece
The aim is to help you make musical decisions that you can apply to your own repertoire.
What’s Included
The course contains nine video modules, supported by:
- A workbook to guide your learning and help you put the ideas into practice
- A five-step pedalling graphic to keep beside your piano as a useful reminder
Work through the material at your own pace, returning to the demonstrations as you try the ideas in your playing.
Who Is It For
This course is particularly suited to adult learners, returning pianists and anyone who wants to move beyond simply pressing the pedal down and hoping for the best.
Whether you’re beginning to use the pedal or have played for years, it offers a practical way to explore this essential part of expressive piano playing.
